Learn Basic Skateboard Tricks

The basic skateboard tricks to learn when you're just getting into skateboarding is the Ollie. You might be wondering why when you actually see this trick performed, but it appears to be one of the easier ones to learn how to perform. The term Ollie came from the tricks inventor, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand who came up with it in 1978.

Doing an Ollie means that the person on the skateboard leaps into the air and takes the board with them using only their feet, not their hands. Oddly enough the feet stay in contact with the board for the whole stunt. learning how to ollie is the foundation tricks for other moves such as how to kickflip, heelflip, Shove It and Pop-Shove It. If you aren't doing the Ollie you're hoplessly "old school." Of course there isn't just one way to do this trick either, there are at least ten variations on the main theme, so get the basic skateboard trick right the first time if you want to move on.

The Shove It is when the boarder makes their deck spin at least 180 degrees or more with it under their feet. To say this requires some major co-ordination is likely an understatement. Generally speaking, without going into the other variations of this move, the Shove It works by standing on the board, jumping up (but not too high) and then pushing the tail down and to the side.

Simple Skateboarding Tricks

The Pop Shove It starts with an ollie, with the boarder jumping up and getting the board airborne, but, at the same time they push the board's tail either clockwise or counter clockwise to achieve a spin. And yes, there are several variations on this move as well, but the general idea is to get the basics in place first and then try the fancy stuff later.

A bit fancier, but still a basic move is the F/S 180, otherwise called the Frontside 180. The idea here is to use your front foot to keep the board spinning, but remember the spin comes from your shoulders. First you ollie, then spin your shoulders. This requires proper positioning to achieve this trick. So get ready to do the ollie, ollie high, turn before doing the 180 and twist your body frontside while tucking the board up and letting it follow you. This loses something in the translation, but when you see it done, it makes sense.

Kickflips are ollies with a 360-degree spin along the board's long axis that makes them sound a bit simpler in execution, but they aren't really, and as with other moves in skateboarding there are at least 16 different variations you can learn as you progress. But for now, these four basic skateboard tricks are a good place to start your skateboarding journey.
